The collection contains the digitized publications put out by RISD students beginning in the early twentieth century. RISD students started their own publications, distinct from the School administration's publications, as early as 1910 with The Lotus, a student yearbook. Many different publications have been released by the student body since then, varying widely in both content and format. Particular publication titles tend to exist for relatively short time spans, usually due to financial difficulties and/or a lack of student interest in joining publications' editorial staff once the existing staff graduates.

Yearbooks, broadsheets, newspapers, literary and art journals, zines, comics, and magazines are represented in the collection. Contents include student artwork, photography, literary essays, and poetry, local and institutional news, editorials, comics, advertisements, and more.

v.1 (2015 - Present)

v.1 was born in 2015 in a RISD graduate course on experimental publishing. Diane Lee (MFA GD 2016) conceived its name—v.1, as in, always “volume 1”—to signal its ambition to be infinitely flexible in form, content, and concept. In 2018, v.1 shifted to a co-curricular and welcomed undergraduate staff and contributors. It’s now a RISD-wide student publication welcoming contributions from students, faculty, staff, and guests from afar.
