  • Taking Art Personally: Austin, Performatives and Art by David Goldblatt

Taking Art Personally: Austin, Performatives and Art

    David Goldblatt

This paper is an attempt to apply speech act theory to aesthetics. In particular, it purports to be a contribution to reception theory by drawing attention to certain similarities between the contextual structure of performatives and the structure of the reception of art. It hopes to locate the auditor or spectator of artworks in what J. L. Austin calls “the total context” to help explain how certain aspects of artworks can be taken personally, somehow being about and seemingly directed at “me.” It is one way the so-called paradox of fiction can be by-passed by showing how the emotive aspects of artworks are not primarily a matter of our caring about the fictional characters portrayed therein, but directly about members of the viewing or listening audience. Concentrating on the performatives of warnings and threats, this paper details the writings of Austin to help explain why some people can relate to characters or situations presented by art while others are barely moved.

  • Philosophical Hermeneutics and the Ethical Function of Architecture by Paul Kidder

Philosophical Hermeneutics and the Ethical Function of Architecture

    Paul Kidder

Karsten Harries’ book, The Ethical Function of Architecture, raises the question of how architecture can be interpretive of and for our time. Part of Harries’ pursuit of this question is done in dialogue with the philosophy of Martin Heidegger, whose evocatively expressed ontology of building and dwelling recovered, in philosophical and poetic terms, the power of buildings to symbolize and interpret the most fundamental truths of being and human existence. The present essay identifies contributions to this hermeneutic and ontological approach to architecture drawn from the philosophy of Hans-Georg Gadamer, emphasizing Gadamer’s notions of play (Spiel), symbol, and the relation of the present to the past. While Gadamer expanded upon Heidegger’s hermeneutic, he also diverged from Heidegger in ways that mitigate some of the difficulties that Harries and others have found with Heidegger’s archaism, rural romanticism, and singularity of philosophical focus.

Paula McCartney, Special Collections, and Fleet Library

36 unnumbered pages : all black and white illustrations Edition of 500. "Snow begins to fall, grows denser, and obliterates my view while exposing the cosmos. Ice shifts, opening a beautiful black void. A wondrous view as I begin my descent. On Thin Ice, In a Blizzard is a subseries of my project, A Field Guide to Snow and Ice. While all of the images in the field guide are excerpts of natural landscapes--just not all snow and ice--the images in this book were constructed in the darkroom. RISD POD 2011 Evaluation & 2012 - 2015 Strategic Plan

    Project Open Door

This evaluation report and strategic plan documents key findings of an external review of Project Open Door and agreement and the 2012-2017 Project Open Door Strategic Plan. The plan represents consensus among Project Open Door faculty, staff, and Dean of Graduate Studies, Research and Engagement, and Advisory Committee members to strengthen and institutionalize the program. Dean Phillips asked that the review “...evaluate the current condition of the program, confirm its scope, scale, and feasible and fruitful staffing scenarios, explore ways to successfully institutionalize it both within and outside of RISD, and identify pathways for the future, including greater visibility for this replicable model, both regionally and nationally.”

Evaluation and plannig supported by a grant from The Rhode Island Foundation.

  • Stories in Pictures (and Non-Pictorial Objects): A Narratological and Cognitive Psychological Approach by Michael Ranta

Stories in Pictures (and Non-Pictorial Objects): A Narratological and Cognitive Psychological Approach

    Michael Ranta

Narratological studies have frequently focused upon linguistic structures, considered to be paradigmatic cases of narrativity, while pictorial signs, such as icons and symbols or indices, have received comparably much less attention. In this paper, however, some basic and regularly occurring narrative aspects of pictures and non-pictorial objects will be presented and discussed.
