On (2006)

On was an interdisciplinary graduate periodical established by RISD graduate students in 2006. It featured essays and student work that related to a general issue theme. On was intended as a quarterly publication, but it is unclear if further issues beyond the first were ever published.

  • Using Video Storytelling to Transform the Consumer Narrative of Fashion into One of Caretaking: A First Step Towards a Sustainable Fashion Industry by Piumi de Alwis

Using Video Storytelling to Transform the Consumer Narrative of Fashion into One of Caretaking: A First Step Towards a Sustainable Fashion Industry

    Piumi de Alwis

This study speaks about today’s apparel industry run by the consumption based “consumer narrative” and will introduce a sustainable alternative of “caretaker narrative,” a consumer oriented way of being to combat toxic practices in the apparel industry. Meanwhile on the other hand in today’s day and age video storytelling is getting extremely popular in the media we daily consume. This study examines how to effectively use video storytelling to popularize the sustainable practice of the “caretaker narrative” in society.

  • Beyond the Lines by Miranda-Max de Beer

    Beyond the Lines

    Miranda-Max de Beer

Long-held frameworks and philosophies developed over human history have rarely accounted for dynamic flux or shifts between parallel states of being; they’ve ignored the glaring consequences humanity’s brief occupation of the Geologic Timeline will have on the planet. These beliefs have enabled societies to operate through life as if there was no tomorrow, (ab)using the Earth without considering those who eventually reap what’s sown. Beyond the Lines identifies manifestations of the mindset that restricts how we understand living systems and the world around us as so much of what exists in tandem with contemporary society does not adhere to the same labeling schema. The investigation focuses on Iceland, the only place on the planet where the birth of new landscapes converges above the ocean's surface, providing a unique opportunity to study how designers operate in an area knowing that natural processes constantly challenge the human desire for controlled, simple delineation. The thesis ultimately culminates in the proposal of strategies of knowing and designing for sites that are conscious in approach and considerate of hidden multifaceted histories by interrogating constraints long bred into human thinking. The site investigation and resulting design demonstrate strong ties to principles of culturally conscious and considerate strategies.

  • Unpacked: Consumer Culture in Suburban Spaces by Jaime Dunlap

Unpacked: Consumer Culture in Suburban Spaces

    Jaime Dunlap

The thesis critically analyzes the ways in which the sacredness of man-made goods and consumption culture have shaped the American home and the ways in which the single-family American home acts as both an architectural enforcer and container of consumer culture.

Consumption culture is the never-ending yearning to purchase our right of being in this world. The idea that, through the ownership of things, we feel connected to, equal to, and even above others. This can be examined not only through the relationships and constant acquisition of things but also through the relationships and acquisitions to the built environment.

There is such a high value placed on homeownership in the United States and, although homeownership as a metric of success is not exclusively American, this idea is deeply rooted in American culture due in part to its connection to the concept of the American Dream. Although it can mean different things to different people, at its simplest, the American Dream can be defined as the notion that, with hard work and determination, upward social and economic mobility is achievable and this is largely possible because America is a ‘free’ country where anything is possible.

It is important to understand the ways in which changes in American culture and American consumer culture have the ability to affect the built environment, specifically the American home and domestic spaces. I am interested in the ways in which the built environment of suburbia both enacts and perpetuates American ideals, norms, and tropes/standards.

This lead me to pose the question: How are American homes and suburban spaces both affected by consumer culture and perpetuate consumer culture?
