On was an interdisciplinary graduate periodical established by RISD graduate students in 2006. It featured essays and student work that related to a general issue theme. On was intended as a quarterly publication, but it is unclear if further issues beyond the first were ever published.

The Department of Furniture Design promotes a way of working that integrates thinking and making. All studios and most courses require the design and execution of resolved objects in real materials at full scale. As a result, there are a lot of things to look at, learn from and think about. This Triennial exhibition includes over 120 objects by over 80 students and alumni. The work of these students and alumni says more about the depth and breadth of our students' experience in Furniture Design than any statement might. Pulling together an exhibition that represents the department in the middle of the fall semester before the completion of most current works requires that pieces were selected from available works created in the last few years. The student works in the exhibition are the products of the Sophomore, Junior, Senior and Grad studios and electives. These make up a curriculum that is both very focused and experimental beginning in the undergraduate area with design principles and specific skills building in the Sophomore year and becoming increasingly experimental in terms of materials, processes and contexts during that Junior and Senior years. The graduate curriculum is built upon individualized research and experimentation culminating in the thesis and leading towards the professional world. The extraordinary alumni works in the exhibition demonstrate examples of successful careers developing out of an education that integrates thinking and making.
