Mixed Media began as the student publication Your Name Here. The November 16, 1997 issue includes articles on elitism and the political left in the US, a history of the Transformers toys, a student's flight experience, RISD's Artist Ball, the lack of cross-departmental studios at RISD, Buckshot Bill artist/author Ron Janson, and an Illustration department pumpkin contest, along with the comic "Buckshot Bill" by Ron Janson, "The RISD Freshman Year Experience" and "The Met's New Product Line" by Adam Swaab, "The Main Event" by Jeremy and J. Drain, event notices, and other announcements.
