Description
Original woodblock printed Hokusai Manga book. Pale brown/grey covers with significant peeling, staining, cracking and wear, stab-bound with maroon thread, holes reinforced with woven tape and three metal grommets. [numbered label on front cover:] 624 ; [numbered circular label on back cover:] 709.52.
Katsushika Hokusai (Japanese printmaker, painter, 1760-1849) is noted for Edo period works of ukiyo-e ('pictures of the floating world') in painting and printmaking. He had a long career of over 70 years and is thought to have created over 30,000 drawings and illustrations for 500 books under multiple names typically associated with shifts in production and style. Since the late 19th century, his work has had a significant impact on Western artists, including Gauguin and van Gogh. Hokusai is best-known as creater of the iconic and internationally recognized woodblock print The Great Wave off Kanagawa, created during the 1820s.
