The 2025 Design Science Symposium was inspired by an initiative led by RISD’s Fleet Library and Edna W. Lawrence Nature Lab to expand teaching, learning and research applications of the Arthur Loeb Design Science Teaching Collection & Archive. The first two days of the event featured keynotes, presentations, and panels on applications of visual mathematics and nature-inspired design in art and design education, and an exhibition of objects and documents from the Loeb Collection. The third day was an interactive showcase of Design Science related making and exploration with a Design Science Maker’s Fair, a workshop at the Edna W. Lawrence Nature Lab, and an installation by the art and design studio, Pneuhaus.

Scholars, makers, educators, and students from across creative and scientific disciplines came together to explore the meaning, exploration, and application design science today. Presentations and discussions were informed by the idea that uncertainty can be an impetus for creativity and scientific thinking.
