Interview of Margaret McAvin conducted by Michael Veracka in Providence, RI on June 30, 1999. McAvin speaks of how she first began teaching at RISD in both the Architecture and Landscape Architecture departments with Wilbur Yoder and Colgate Searle. McAvin also recalls what both the graduate and undergraduate students at RISD were like during her time teaching and what for the Wheeler Farm.

Biographical/Historical Note

Margaret McAvin (1946-1999) was a professor of Architecture and Landscape Architecture at the Rhode Island School of design between 1981-1999 and was one of the first recipients of RISD’s John R. Frazier Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1986. McAvin attended Barnard College and Rice University, studying literature, art history, and physics, before receiving a Master of Architecture and Master of Landscape Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania.

McAvin is interviewed by Michael Veracka, an ecological designer, educator, and a 1992 alumni of RISD’s Landscape Architecture department. The interview takes place on June 30, 1999. In the interview, McAvin discusses her training, and professional career development, including her years at RISD. Directed by Frank Muhly.
