Interview of Jay Coogan, conducted by Andrew Martinez in Fleet Library at RISD in Providence, RI on June 23, 2009 for the RISD Oral History Project. Coogan speaks of his time teaching in the sculpture department at RISD and being chief critic for the European Honors Program (EHP) in Rome before becoming associate provost and provost. Coogan also recalls the strengths and weaknesses of RISD as a design school, what the school is doing well, and the places in which it could improve. Along with this, Coogan discusses his upcoming position at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and what he can take with him from his experiences at RISD and those who have inspired him.

Biographical/Historical Note

Jay Coogan is the President of the IYRS School of Technology & Trades in Newport, Rhode Island. He began teaching in the Sculpture Department at the Rhode Island School of Design where he worked for 25 years, serving as the Dean of Fine Arts and Provost. In 2009, he was appointed President of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and served for nine years. Coogan received a BA in Visual Arts from Brown University and an MFA in Sculpture from Hunter College.

Coogan is interviewed by Andrew Martinez, Archivist at the Rhode Island School of Design, in 2007 for a documentary on RISD’s European Honors Program. Produced by Peter O'Neill and Andrew Martinez.
