David Macaulay, an award-winning author and illustrator, received his Bachelor's degree in Architecture from RISD in 1969. He subsequently taught in the School’s Foundation Studies and Illustration Departments at two separate intervals. In this interview, Macaulay shares his recollections of his life-changing, final academic year in Rome (1968-69), as a student in the European Honors Program.

Biographical/Historical Note

David Macaulay is an award-winning author and illustrator. He received his bachelor's degree in Architecture from RISD in 1969, spending his fifth year with RISD’s European Honors Program in Rome. He taught in RISD’s Foundation Studies and Illustration departments at two separate intervals and serves as Vice President and founding board member of the National Children’s Book and Literacy Alliance. He published his first book, Cathedral, in 1973.

Macaulay is interviewed by Andrew Martinez, a RISD archivist, on October 28, 2013. In this interview, Macaulay shares his recollections of his life-changing, final academic year in Rome (1968-69). Produced by Andrew Martinez. Videography by Victor Gan (FAV 2016).
