Interview of David Macaulay conducted by Andrew Martinez in Providence, RI on October 28, 2013. Macaulay speaks of his time in Rome through RISD's European Honors Program and how it influenced his work as an architect. Macaulay also recalls EHP's homestay program and his time in Assisi. Along with this, Macaulay discusses his love for Rome and the importance of experiencing the city if a student is selected for the EHP.

Biographical/Historical Note

David Macaulay is an award-winning author and illustrator. He received his bachelor's degree in Architecture from RISD in 1969, spending his fifth year with RISD’s European Honors Program in Rome. He taught in RISD’s Foundation Studies and Illustration departments at two separate intervals and serves as Vice President and founding board member of the National Children’s Book and Literacy Alliance. He published his first book, Cathedral, in 1973.

Macaulay is interviewed by Andrew Martinez, a RISD archivist, on October 28, 2013. In this interview, Macaulay shares his recollections of his life-changing, final academic year in Rome (1968-69). Produced by Andrew Martinez. Videography by Victor Gan (FAV 2016).
