NOTICING Exhibition Statement, Jo Sittenfeld, 2013:
"This semester I have again had the privilege of teaching two wonderful groups of students whose work is shown here. One was the Documentary Photography class at the Rhode Island School of Design, a mix of undergraduate and graduate students from RISD and Brown University with varying levels of photo experience. The other was an after-school digital photography class at Shea High School in Pawtucket, RI, run through RISD’s high school outreach program, Project Open Door. Both groups of students examined the world around them in order to tell a story. They were instructed to photograph the familiar (their families, their friends, their surroundings) and the unfamiliar. The work displayed on these walls, though varied, represents a glimpse of our collective community. I believe it also captures the beauty, the power, the immediacy, and the continuing relevance of documentary photography. Enjoy the Show. Jo Sittenfeld December 2013”
