  • Can You Name 10 African American Themed Pop-Up Books? by Kyra E. Hicks, Special Collections, and Fleet Library

Can You Name 10 African American Themed Pop-Up Books?

Kyra E. Hicks, Special Collections, and Fleet Library

1 folded sheet (unpaged) : color illustrations. Cover title; "10" in title appears on cut-out pull-tab. Open edition artist book. Pop-up brochure with pull-tab. Photocopy. Card stock, various weights. Includes bibliography of 7 African American-themed pop-up books on back cover. "Pop-up books are magically enchanting. They have the power to take us to new galaxies, revisit historical events, introduce new people, and re-interpret familiar stories. Can a child of color in the US see themselves in today's pop-up books? How would a Black girl, for example, feel seeing an image like her on the cover of a pop-up book? How would she feel turning the pages of a 3D adventure where she is the heroine? Might she be inspired to imagine, design and build her own pop-up stories? The US Census Bureau says there are 9.1 million Black children under the age of 15 or 15% of all US children in that age range. That seems like a good market size. Yet, it is most difficult to find a pop-up book with a Black child as the hero. You can help. Can you name 10 African American-themed pop-up books? Or, even 2? This pop-up brochure showcases African American-themed pop-up books located to date--not one published in the last two decades--and suggests ways to address this gap"--from 23 Sandy Gallery website http://23sandy.com/works/products-page/curated-collections/pop-up-movable/can-you-name-10-african-american-themed-pop-up-books, viewed 1/25/2016. • The Bee Book by Matt Holbein, Emily Brooks, Foliage Library, Special Collections, and Fleet Library

    The Bee Book

Matt Holbein, Emily Brooks, Foliage Library, Special Collections, and Fleet Library

1 volume (in box) : color illustrations + 1 instruction booklet. Statement of responsibility from back cover of book. "The Bee Book is part of the Foliage LIbrary, a series of educational pop-up books by Matt Holbein & Emily Brooks."--Accompanying instruction booklet. "The Foliage LIbrary: Exploring nature through interactive folding books"--Back of box. The artists were inspired by classes on artists' books and pop-up books taught at the RIT Libraries for the creation of this book and others from their company. Funding for The Bee Book was obtained through a Kickstarter campaign. "The Bee Book is an illustrated interactive folding pop-up children's book. It has a unique hexagonal structure inspired by the shape of honey-combs, and its pieces flip out and unfold into different layers of hexagons and diamonds. The layers act as pages and contain colorful, realistic illustrations of the six families of bees found in North America and the flowers they are attracted to. Included along with the illustrations are fun facts which describe how these bees go about pollinating flowers, why they are drawn to specific flowers in particular, and how different flavors of honey occur naturally based on the kinds of flowers involved in the process. In addition to this, the very structure of the book is a learning opportunity as it incorporates a great deal of geometry and mathematical thought. By seeing how basic shapes move and fold in space, the brain will be more apt to understand how two-dimensional shapes relate to the physical world. Exposing children to this sort of stimuli at a young age could increase their likelihood to comprehend and enjoy math classes later in their education. Overall, The Bee Book incorporates elements of art, geometry, engineering, and environmentalism and can help awaken interests in these topics in both children and adults."--Publisher's website, http://thefoliagelibrary.com/, viewed December 8, 2015. Accompanied by a publisher's announcement postcard for this book, inscribed by the artists to Kari Horowicz, Art and Photography Librarian, RIT Libraries. NRRI

Translation of: Dans la forêt du paresseux / traduzione, Nicola Locatelli."In the mild, humid climate of the Amazon forest, the sloth spends its entire life wrapped round the same tree, impassive and untouched by the light and sounds around it. It sleeps on regardless of the sudden arrival of the deforestation machinery: caterpillars, trucks, excavators and mechanical shears that rumble through the forest, scaring off all the other animals. The book tells the story of the sloth and its proverbial slowness, which is now placing it in danger from man's short-sighted and tragic encroachment. Fourteen pop-up pages examine the gradual erosion of the Amazon forest. As we leaf through the pages, animals and trees appear before our eyes and in our hands, as if we were in a natural environment that is constantly changing"--Corraini WWW site.Gift of Jessica Gutierrez.
