The goal of the Teachers’ Studio Institute: GRAND SCALE was to provide elementary and secondary art teachers the opportunity to expand or renew their creative practice within a studio environment of risk, experimentation and discovery. In this Institute, working in RISD’s graduate studios and facilitated by three artists-in-residence – David Frazer,Nancy Friese and Jane Masters – the studio became a site for an exploration of the theme GRAND SCALE through critical making, critical thinking and critical dialog. While the primary focus of this Institute centered on teachers’ personal growth as makers, it was the Institute’s hope that the participants’ experience would have have both direct and subtle influences on their future teaching practice. The Teachers' Studio Institute was made possible through the generosity of a grant from the Surdna Foundation's Thriving Cultures Program.
