Description
Verblifa United Tin Can Producers (Vereenigde Blik Fabrikanten) commissioned M.C. Escher to create a tin to commemorate its 75th anniversary. Each tin was to be filled with bonbons and given to employees, clients, and business associates. While Escher was not initially enthusiastic about the commission, he was inspired to create a complex 20-sided icosahedral tin after viewing an octagonal anti prism tin, entitled Koh-I-Nor, that the company produced for Verkade, a Dutch biscuit company. The resulting tin was decorated with a tessellating sea star pattern, as a sea star could cover each of the icosahedron’s 12 vertices without loosing it’s shape. Verblifa produced 7000 of the commemorative tins.
