How do we define memories?
(what makes them so bitter?)
(what makes them so sweet?)
As time creates spaces between us, how to memories hold what sits between?
Memories act as markers in time, while also remaining subject to it. They affect how we both perceive and feel when thinking about the present. Although they are often viewed with a sense of significance, memories shift, change, and fall apart, constantly rebuilding the narratives of our experiences. Through the lenses and practices of different methods of creation, how do we, as fellow subjects to time, immortalize these fleeting moments?
In its function as a gateway into the ephemeral, art grounds these moments within time. As such, "Memories and How We Hold Them" seeks to explore the intimacies of our histories, and how they can be experienced as internal and external. Through this investigation of memory, viewers will not only be able to key into their own pasts, but also to find and see themselves in the memories of others.
We hope to shed light on how we hold our own memories and how they hold us too.
