"With physical movement often restricted, female-identifying people, queer people, Black people invent ways
to create space through rupture. Here, in that disruption, with our collective congregation at that trippy and trip
wired crossroad of gender, race, and sexuality, one finds the power of the glitch."
Legacy Russell, Glitch Feminism: A Manifesto
Being an artist inhabiting a feminized or racialized body implies residing within a space of political, social or economic marginality. Feminized focuses on heterogeneous identities addressing gender, race, class, sexual orientation, ethnicity, citizenship, age and disability by way of politically compromised making. Intersections nourish the layers of understanding and de-telling of marginal experiences while recognizing the strength of intersectional difference. This engaged making is interested in, dually, conceptual and material transgression, allowing for a unique juncture to utilize a variety of aesthetic production.
Feminized is a term that explores intersections of gender, race, and class without subjecting or confining individuals to hegemonic conceptions of femininity. The term "feminized subject" does not limit itself to womxn but extends to designate the objectified in all othering relationships-between colonized and colonizer, poor and rich, marginal and central, marked and unmarked. This term is not restricted to 'women' as its subject and is invested in its own subversion and ability to welcome revision. Feminized, as a category, is ever shifting and malleable.
The artists featured in this exhibition are investigating topics related to androgyny, girlhood, materiality, queerness, race, sexual liberation, morality, vulnerability, bodily autonomy, environmentalism, womanhood, insecurity, religion, and reproductive rights. Through a variety of mediums and concepts displayed, this exhibition aims to transgress and reformulate what it means to be feminized through the lens these artists provide.
