There are multifaceted and complex meanings of home that can be defined as multidimensional constructs that are marked by internal unity. However, the concept of home has been psychologically and socially constructed into ideal forms, disregarding its contradictory meanings relating to permanence, continuity, and ownership.
The "Color of My Land' sets out to explore the diversity of the meaning of home by focusing on individual lived experiences that socially, psychologically, and physically construct home while explaining the narratives of various realities as well. This exhibition represents land not only as a geographical concept but as a social product in order to recognize that human agency transforms what occurs on the land.
The artists of the show "The Color of my Land' represent experiences of immigration, displacement, and multiculturalism. This show is a moment for our artists to unapologetically express their identities that are rooted in home, while also granting the space and the agency to share convictions regarding the redemption of land that is desired due to continued unjust realities of occupation. The artists' approaches also reflect the journeys that families endeavored to begin a new life. The artists are creating a home outside of their home, allowing our students to compare and construct a broadened, more diverse worldview in order for their experience of cultural differences to become more complex and more sophisticated.
