Curatorial Statement: In 1979 Rosalind Krauss wrote about a ''definitive rupture'' in the world of sculpture in her landmark essay ''Sculpture in the Expanded Field." The broadening expanse of sculpture being redefined then parallels the widening spectrum of gender identities today. Untethered to hereditary constructs, we have new opportunities to abandon linear, rigid understandings of male and female roles, norms, archetypes, and stereotypes.
In this exhibition we aim to excavate the archeological inheritance of gender, while at the same time traversing its current multiplicity, a space in which one may affirm, deny, or challenge the gender status quo. The art in Expanded Field explores everything from speculative products addressing gender in their packaging to feminist discourse within minimalist ideology. Whether through images, materiality, or performative gestures, the works query social identities, experiences, and currency.
We hope Expanded Field incites a sense of curiosity and play about gender, inspiring an unlearning of the gender choreography we all learn individually and collectively in all kinds of historical, cultural, and social contexts.
