Personal Culture focuses on a selection of works from twenty-nine students with varied backgrounds and disciplines. Our work is united by the need to share a unique perspective with the Rhode Island School of Design and the greater artistic community. Through shared geographies, habits, and histories, we learn from each other. These works are political, cultural, and always personal.
With forty-nine countries represented at RISD, Personal Culture seeks to create a forum for cultural discourse. What role does the artists' national background play in their body of work, and can we resist the deterministic assumption that our hybridity will inform the entirety of our artistic practice? Whether the piece is a digital projection commenting on the disjointed standards in modern China, or a visual cultivation of the declined architecture in Buffalo, New York, each artist's work addresses what "personal culture" means today.
As we continually learn from each other through our artistic processes, investigation, and collaboration, what we have in common is our experience at RISD. Personal Culture aims to capture the essence of the RISD student body as a melting pot of experience, not merely defined by where we are from, but by the dialogue we create.
