Interview of Holly Hughes conducted by Andrew Martinez in Memorial Hall in Providence, RI on June 1, 2017 on the occasion of her retirement from the Rhode Island School of Design. Hughes speaks of her background in painting and her experience in galleries in New York City before she began teaching in the Painting department at RISD. Hughes also recalls a variety of different graduate and undergraduate students she taught in both Painting and Printmaking who have now become successful artists and the faculty members she worked closely with. Along with this, Hughes discusses working with the RISD Museum and the ways in which she believes the school and museum could improve.
Biographical/Historical Note
Holly Hughes is a painter who began teaching in the Painting department at the Rhode Island School of Design in 1991. She received her BFA from the State University of New York in 1975, having previously studied at Pratt Institute and the Silvermine Guild, School of Arts in New Canaan, Connecticut.
Holly is interviewed by Andrew Martinez, a RISD archivist, on June 1, 2017. In the interview Holly shares her thoughts and recollections from her time at RISD on the occasion of her retirement in 2017. Produced by Peter O'Neill and Andrew Martinez.
