Description
exterior; Built for Earl P. Mason of Providence, RI in 1853, president of the Rhode Island National Bank. The house was designed by Providence architect Thomas Alexander Tefft in the Italianate villa style. In 1880 the house was sold to New York lawyer Egerton Winthrop. Remodeled by Ogden Codman, Jr. in 1903 in Classical Revival style. Mansion renamed "Quatrel" in 1949 by new owners Louis and Elaine Lorillard, founders of The Newport Jazz Festival; Photograph exhibited in Rhode Island Architecture Exhibition, 1939, RISD Museum. Curated by RISD Museum Director Alexander Dorner (tenure 1938-1941) and architectural historian Henry-Russell Hitchcock.
