Description
Assembled from house frames, ladders, floating decks, mattresses, rotating light sources, and one dancer, Telegraph Valley makes momentary dwellings out of holes and passageways. It attempts to deconstruct the body as a “house for the soul” metaphor to uncover something that roves, collides, undercuts, and transforms what we understand ourselves to be, how we merge with others, and how we merge with our own solitude to get somewhere new.
Standing in place of the body, this installation acts as a container, a structure, a frame, but through its passageways, openings, and gaps. Samuelson invites us both in and up, through and around, guiding us to entrances and exits, both above and below. Drawing on the principles of Oskar Fishinger’s early 20th century Wax Slicing Machine, the animations situated inside of the installation travel layer by layer through its body, a CT scan searching wood grain, mattress fibers, and metal springs for the oceanic in the static, past in the present, transductive inside the manufactured, and connection across each horizontal split. Telegraph Valley investigates the kind of recuperation that unfolds in time and as time, through glimpses, loops, and out of sight, movement across ebb and flow.
