Description
For two decades Howard Ben Tré has been finding ways to bring together in innovative sculptural forms the sensuality of glass and the physicality of the casting process. Abstract and Modernist in classical twentieth-century style, Ben Tré's work is nevertheless archetypal in nature.
Although introduced to his signature material, glass, by members of the American Studio Glass Movement, Ben Tré quickly took his own path. In 1977 he pioneered three-dimensional casting, thereby revolutionizing the 5,000-year old tradition of working with glass and bringing this unlikely medium to the contemporary sculptor's repertoire.
This video surveys the broad scope of Howard Ben Tré's career. Emmy Award-winning video maker George Adams documents the sculptures, drawings, works on paper, and environmental public projects. From perspectives collected over a four-year period, Adams investigates Ben Tré's creative process in the studio, factory, and on site, incorporating thoughtful commentary by independent curator Mary Jane Jacob, philosopher Arthur Danto, and the Museum of Modern Art's Director of Education, Patterson Sims, as well as Gay Ben Tré, the artist's wife and collaborator.
