Art Institute Programs and Transcripts

 

The Institutes of Art were three-day symposiums sponsored by the Brown/RISD Community Art Project. The symposiums included sessions on Fine Arts, art collecting and exhibitions, printing, industry and commerce, art in the community, civic art, and art in relation to literature. These records include Institute programs, maps, other materials published in connection to the Institutes, and transcripts of lectures and speeches given during sessions.

    Brown/RISD Community Art Project

    The Art Institute program for October 31 through November 3, 1935 took place in various venues at Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design. The first session was a talk about Art, Economics and our American Future. The Second talk was The Machine and Good Taste. The third talk was Mural Art in America. The fourth talk was American Music Today. There was a musical recital by the Boston Chamber orchestra in the RISD Museum of Art.

    This Art Institute program took place on December 7 through December 9 1934 at various places at the Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design campuses. The first session featured a talk called The Art Spirit in American Life. The second session featured a talk called The History of Motion Picture as Art, and The Technique of Cinematography (illustrated by the film The Eighth Art). The third session featured a talk called Tradition and Theory in Modern Furniture (illustrated). The fourth session featured a talk called Trends in American Painting Today(illustrated). There also were two recitals and several painting exhibitions.
