Bulletin of the Rhode Island School of Design (1913-1937) (Publications)

The Bulletin of the Rhode Island School of Design began publication with the January 1913 issue for the purpose of spreading “knowledge about the activities of the institution and the advance of art in the state.” The eight page Bulletin, edited by L. Earle Rowe (RISD Director, 1912-1929, and Museum Director, 1929-1937), contained short essays by Rowe on works of art held by the Museum of Art, information on exhibits, accessions, and loans, as well as brief notices on the School, the Library, corporate officers, publications, and Museum admissions policies. Over time the Bulletin expanded to 16+ pages as the essays increased in length and number. Curator Miriam Banks, Museum Assistant Caroline M. Morton, and others contributed essays.

The Journal

In recent years aesthetics has grown into a rich and varied discipline. Its scope has widened to embrace ethical, social, religious, environmental, and cultural concerns. As international communication increases through more frequent congresses and electronic communication, varied traditions have joined with its historically interdisciplinary character, making aesthetics a focal center of diverse and multiple interests. These need a forum that is universal and inclusive, easy to access, and unhampered by financial, political, and institutional barriers. An on-line publication offers an ideal opportunity for advancing these purposes and Contemporary Aesthetics hopes to provide that forum.
